Observation types
Every price observation carries exactly one type. Only executable offers are shown as something you can buy.
| Type | What it is | Buyable |
|---|---|---|
| Executable offer | A firm price from a supplier for a stated volume, valid until a stated date. | Yes |
| Indicative quote | A supplier's non-binding price, which may change before an order. | No |
| Trade | A completed transaction at a known price and volume. | No (historical) |
| Auction clearing price | A public auction result, such as a government Guarantee of Origin auction. | No (historical) |
| Assessment | A price reporter's estimate of where the market trades, usually for large lots. | No (reference) |
What we record with each price
- Lot size and minimum order, in MWh. Small lots often cost several times more per MWh than large ones.
- Fees included: registry, redemption, broker and tax, and the currency.
- Delivery terms: transfer or redemption, delivery time, payment terms and how long the price is valid.
- Eligibility attributes: instrument, country or market, technology, vintage, plant commissioning date and any label such as Green-e.
- Source, date and permission to publish.
Rules we apply
- No blending. We never average buyable offers with historical references into one number.
- Original currency first. Prices are shown in the currency observed. Converted values are labelled with the rate and its date.
- Like for like. Comparisons only use observations with the same instrument, market, technology, vintage, lot size and delivery terms, taken on the same date.
- Stale data is marked. Any observation older than 30 days is labelled as such.
Sources and permissions
We publish public data, such as government auction results and registry statistics, with attribution. We do not republish paid price assessments. Supplier quotes are published only with the supplier's written permission; otherwise they inform our own quotes but stay private.
