How buying works

REGOs are used by suppliers for fuel mix disclosure and by companies for market-based Scope 2 claims. They are bought through suppliers, traders and auctions, and redeemed against UK consumption for the relevant period.

Market conditions

After a sharp rise in 2022 and 2023, REGO prices fell as supply caught up with demand, and analysts describe the market as oversupplied. Prices differ by technology, with biomass and non-biomass increasingly treated separately.

What to check before buying

  • UK consumption only. An EU Guarantee of Origin does not cover a UK site, and a REGO does not cover an EU site.
  • Compliance period matching your reporting year.
  • Technology, especially if your policy excludes biomass.
