China GECs

Green Electricity Certificates are China's national renewable electricity certificate and, since I-REC issuance ended in March 2025, the only one recognised for consumption in China.

Why it matters for supply chains

Many suppliers to international brands operate in China. Their renewable electricity claims now need GECs: I-RECs issued for Chinese generation after March 2025 are no longer available, and older ones are recognised only for generation up to the end of 2024.

How buying works

GECs are sold through government-designated platforms, either alone or bundled with green power trading. If you buy through an intermediary, ask them to confirm their access to a designated platform.

What to check before buying

  • Consumption in China by the claiming entity.
  • Vintage and validity: certificates expire two years after issuance.
  • Evidence of use for your entity and period from the issuing platform.
